Romans 8:15 ESV

“For you did not receive the spirit of slavery to fall back into fear…”

If You Are Free, Why Are You Still Living in Bondage?

My friend, what does freedom truly mean?

Is it good health? A stable job? Financial comfort, status, a high position, or a sense of control? Many people equate freedom with these things. You may even be like the church in Laodicea, described in Revelation 3:14–22, where they believed their material wealth and comfort reflected spiritual success. They didn’t feel the need to give God their full hearts, just enough, because their possessions became their security and their power to resist fear, instead of relying on God.

But my friend, read what Jesus said to that church. He was not impressed with their lukewarm devotion.

Fear manifests in many ways, and it often hides in our decisions, actions, and compromises. Fear is more than just a feeling. It’s a spiritual weapon, a silent trigger the enemy uses to fuel sin in our lives. Sometimes we see it; other times, we don’t. Satan uses fear to paralyze our faith, distort our view of God, and lead us into rebellion. Fear creeps in through anxiety, control, power, unmet needs, avoidance, people pleasing, anger, revenge, jealousy, and more.

When these emotions take root, we often seek comfort or relief in the wrong places. If we are not anchored in God through Jesus Christ, if the Holy Spirit is not our daily guide, we will fall into sin.

Many people today are living in spiritual bondage, not realizing that hidden fears are fueling their sins.

Let’s look at two powerful examples:

Lying
Lying has become normalized in our society, not just in the world, but even among those who call themselves Christians. And worse, we often excuse or endorse lies when they come from people we admire or consider “anointed.”

But let’s ask honestly: Why do we lie?
Most lies are rooted in fear:

  • Fear of rejection
  • Fear of losing a job or status
  • Fear of judgment
  • Fear of consequences
  • Fear of staying single or damaging a marriage
  • Fear of being alone
  • Fear that God won’t provide, so you take matters into your own hands
  • Fear of hard truths
  • Fear of not belonging

Fear is the silent motivator behind many of our untruths—and the enemy knows it.

Sexual Immorality
In today’s culture, sexual sin is not just accepted, it’s celebrated. But God's standard for sexual purity has never changed, from the Old Testament to the New. What has changed is this: we now have Jesus Christ, our High Priest, who offers freedom from sin if we allow the Holy Spirit to lead our lives.

So why do so many continue to ignore God's commands when it comes to sexual immorality?

Because at its core, sexual sin is often rooted in fear and mistrust, a lack of faith in God’s promises and His order. It manifests in:

  • Adultery
  • Premarital sex
  • Homosexual acts
  • Pornography and lustful fantasies
  • Prostitution
  • Masturbation
  • Any sexual activity outside of God’s created design for intimacy in marriage between one man and one woman

My friend, these are just two examples of sin driven by fear. There are many more. But lying and sexual immorality are clearly listed among the sins that lead to eternal separation from God if we do not repent:

“But the cowardly, the unbelieving, the vile, the murderers, the sexually immoral, those who practice magic arts, the idolaters and all liars—they will be consigned to the fiery lake of burning sulfur. This is the second death.”
Revelation 21:8 (NIV)

If you desire to go deeper into this topic, I invite you to listen to Episodes 12–19 of my podcast, Sacred Journey of a Spiritual Warrior. We unpack these truths in more depth with Scripture, reflection, and personal testimony.

Finally, my friend, if you claim that Jesus Christ is your Lord and Savior, but you continue to live in sexual immorality or use lying as your coping mechanism or source of power, you are being deceived.

The Spirit God gave you is not a spirit of slavery or fear. He gave you a spirit of power, love, and self-discipline. (2 Timothy 1:7)

So I ask again: If you are free in Christ, why are you still living in bondage?
