“For the Spirit God gave us does not make us timid, but gives us power, love and self-discipline.”
Are You Bound by God’s Power or by Worldly Fear?
My friend, why do you do what you do every day?
If we’re being superficial, we might immediately point to life’s obligations and say, “I need to.”
“I need to work—because if I don’t, the bills won’t get paid, and my family and I won’t eat.” And truthfully, even that response is biblical, because God does call us to work and provide, so that we may also help those in need:
“Anyone who has been stealing must steal no longer, but must work, doing something useful with their own hands, that they may have something to share with those in need.”
— Ephesians 4:28 (NIV)
But today, I’m asking you to dig deeper than surface-level answers. Look back over your day, your week, your month—even this entire year. Were your decisions shaped more by a fear of God, or by fear of people?
Can you honestly say that you've been striving to live according to God’s full expectations, because His opinion matters more to you than the thoughts of your parents, friends, spouse, boss, or society?
This is not about being perfect. As long as Satan is still roaming this earth, there is a constant fight for our salvation. That’s why we need the blood of Jesus every single day, until He returns to take us home, give us our perfected bodies, and bring us into paradise.
“For the perishable must clothe itself with the imperishable, and the mortal with immortality.” — 1 Corinthians 15:53 (NIV)
“He will wipe every tear from their eyes. There will be no more death or mourning or crying or pain…” — Revelation 21:4 (NIV)
“…we eagerly await a Savior from there, the Lord Jesus Christ, who… will transform our lowly bodies so that they will be like his glorious body.” — Philippians 3:20–21 (NIV)
The reverent fear I’m talking about is walking in the power of God, fully aware that each of us will be judged by every word we speak and every action we take. Therefore, we consciously decide to live lives that reflect God's whole law and holiness.
“The fear of the Lord is the beginning of wisdom: and the knowledge of the holy is understanding.”
— Proverbs 9:10 (KJV)
So, how do we distinguish between destructive fear and holy fear?
My friend, fear is part of the inner response God created in us, but like everything else, Satan works to distort it. He uses fear as a silent weapon, causing us to doubt God’s voice and nudging us to rebel against divine authority.
There is a battle for your soul. God originally designed fear as a natural reaction to draw us toward Him. But Satan twists it to push us away from God.
Which direction is your fear steering your life today?
Toward the power and presence of God, or toward Satan’s lies and deception?
