“Martha, Martha,” the Lord answered, “you are worried and upset about many things, but few things are needed—or indeed only one. Mary has chosen what is better, and it will not be taken away from her.”
What Does It Mean to Learn from Jesus?
Mary gives us a powerful picture of what it truly means to learn from Jesus. While Martha was distracted by serving, Mary did three very intentional things:
Jesus then said something very important:
“Mary has chosen what is better.”
This does not mean that Mary chose something good while Martha chose something bad. What Jesus revealed is that learning from Him is the better path. And this is the one thing Satan will fight hardest to keep you from doing.
Satan does not mind:
Your busyness — because busyness often shifts our focus to our strengths, our knowledge, our abilities, and even how noble we appear in the eyes of society. If we are not alert, Jesus can slowly become less present in our lives, or quietly pushed aside, while we still believe we are walking with Him in our hearts.
Your serving — serving is powerful and selfless. But when our why is not aligned with the Word of God, serving can become the foundation of our identity. When that happens, service turns into pride, and obedience becomes self-exaltation.
Your religious activity — religious activity in itself is not harmful. But when it becomes the center of our faith instead of Jesus being our anchor, we are left with religion without the power of God to transform our lives. That is when it becomes dangerous to our soul’s connection with God.
As we learned, the Apostle Paul describes this condition in 2 Timothy 3:5 as “having a form of godliness but denying its power.”
Satan is terrified when you stop, become still, and truly listen to Jesus,
when you reject his lies and choose to live by God’s truth as your roadmap.
Jesus is ready for you to come into His presence, no matter where you are in life, to set you free.
