Weekly Reflection

John 3:16 NIV

“For God so loved the world that he gave his one and only Son, that whoever believes in him shall not perish but have eternal life.”

Have you ever taken the time to sit and meditate on this verse?

I will never forget the day Jesus stirred my soul at the age of sixteen and made me still enough to truly reflect on what it means to believe in Him.

By that age, Jesus had already rescued me. I was baptized, raised as a new creation, and I was fired up, saved, and Holy Spirit–filled. The Lord had already performed miracles in my life beyond earthly explanation. Yet one day, the Holy Spirit led me to ask, There has to be more than just being a grateful sinner.

I was involved in the church. I knew the Scriptures. I understood the power of the cross through Jesus Christ, and I knew I was called to share with the world what the Lord had done for me. But through prayer and seeking revelation from the Lord, the Spirit helped me realize it was time to surrender my past, present, and future to God’s will.

The Holy Spirit pressed me to face myself, yes, my own flaws, those very areas Satan was slowly using to lead me toward having a form of godliness but denying its power. Flaws such as bitterness, rage, unforgiveness, lying, people-pleasing, and depression.

My battles were not obvious. On the outside, I appeared to have everything together. But on the inside, I was constantly fighting Satan’s lies, lies I too often believed while professing to be a Christian.

Jesus tells us that He died for the entire world, but there is one crucial clause we must not overlook:

“Whoever believes.”

Knowing about God is not the same as believing in Him. That is why, in John 8:31, Jesus adds another clause, “if.” Anytime I hear the word if, it tells me there are expectations, a condition, and a choice to be made.

Belief is not passive.
Belief requires faith, action, and conviction.

So what does it truly mean, according to Jesus, to believe in Him?

Many people confuse believing in Jesus with self-effort—good behavior, church involvement, and moral checklists. That was my life until I allowed the Word of God not only to save me, but to heal me from the inside out.

When Jesus speaks of His disciples believing in Him, He speaks of a belief far deeper than outward behavior. This belief is a call to surrender, transformation, and commitment, a declaration that you no longer live, but that Jesus Christ lives in you.

My friend, Jesus invites you into an intimate relationship with Him.

As you enter this New Year, take time to examine your life and make an honest assessment. Have you surrendered everything to Jesus? Are you confident that when you say, “Lord, I lived for You,” you will not hear the words:

“I never knew you. Away from me, you evildoers.”
(Matthew 7:23)
