Weekly Reflection

John 14:21

“Whoever has my commands and keeps them is the one who loves me. The one who loves me will be loved by my Father, and I too will love them and show myself to them.”

My friend, obedience to the Word of God is the clearest evidence of genuine discipleship in Jesus.

Anyone can say they love Jesus. Many may even carry titles such as Christian, disciple, believer, pastor, or teacher, yet remain unanchored in Jesus as Lord and Savior. Claiming love for Him while continuing in sin is deception. Jesus makes it clear that true disciples hold to His teaching (John 8:31). Knowledge about Jesus is not enough—belief must be lived out through obedience.

This is not about stumbling as we strive to walk with Christ, for Scripture reminds us that all have sinned and fall short of the glory of God (Romans 3:23). This is about deliberate, unrepented sin—sin excused, justified, or hidden behind position, title, or the false comfort of believing, “Jesus understands,” while ignoring loving correction.

We are not talking about a building or an institution. We are the church when Jesus Christ lives in us. As His followers, our lives are meant to be His appeal to the world:

“We are therefore Christ’s ambassadors, as though God were making his appeal through us.”
(2 Corinthians 5:20)

Jesus explains this clearly:

“Everyone who sins is a slave to sin… So if the Son sets you free, you will be free indeed.”
(John 8:34–36)

Freedom comes through obedience. Keeping His commands is not religious performance—it is a transformed life shaped by gratitude for what He has rescued us from.

To love Jesus is to love the Father. Jesus and the Father are one (John 10:30), and Jesus alone is the way to God (John 14:6). Any belief system that rejects Jesus cannot truly know God (1 John 2:22–23).

If you want to see Jesus, you must hold to His teaching. Jesus is alive, present with us in suffering, and faithful to His promise never to leave us (Hebrews 4:15; 13:5). His Word refines us and anchors us in truth.

Jesus did not say, “If you know my teachings,” or “If you agree with them.”
He said, “If you hold to my teaching, you are really my disciples” (John 8:31).

Knowledge without obedience is religion. Obedience rooted in love is discipleship.

Jesus asks you today:
Do you want life? Do you want the living water He offers (John 4)?

Then don’t just know His teaching or select what feels comfortable. Decide today to surrender your whole life to Jesus’ authority.
