Weekly Reflection

Colossians 3:1–2 NIV

"Set your hearts on things above… Set your minds on things above, not on earthly things."

A friend recently told me she was asked to choose her favorite holiday, and she chose her birthday. I thought that was clever because the day we were born matters; it is the day God breathed His very Spirit into us. Scripture reminds us:

“…the LORD God formed a man from the dust of the ground and breathed into his nostrils the breath of life…”
Genesis 2:7

After she shared, she asked me, “What is your favorite holiday?”

I gave her an honest answer: I no longer have a favorite holiday.
If she had asked me this question six years ago, I would have said Christmas without hesitation.

You may be wondering, “Wait a minute — what changed your mind?”
God’s Word did.

In this season of my life, God has led me to focus on one day that stays anchored in my mind, heart, and soul, the day I will be with Jesus in the great city described in Revelation.

“I saw the Holy City, the new Jerusalem, coming down out of heaven from God…”
Revelation 21:2

As a disciple of Jesus Christ, I celebrate His coming and His resurrection every single day.
I believe that once we choose to follow Jesus, every day becomes a celebration of:

  • Christmas — the birth of our Savior
  • Easter — His resurrection and our new life

Christianity is not a checklist; it is a daily transformation.
Every day, our thoughts, words, and actions should proclaim that we no longer live by the flesh, but by the new birth we have received through Jesus Christ.

“Therefore, if anyone is in Christ, he is a new creation; the old has gone, the new is here!”
2 Corinthians 5:17

“It is no longer I who live, but Christ who lives in me.”
Galatians 2:20

Now, if you ask me which holidays I still celebrate with the world, I will say Christmas, Easter, and New Year’s. I look forward to these days because they open unique doors to share the Gospel, especially with those who may not be open to hearing about Jesus any other time of the year.

You may ask, “How does New Year’s fit into this?”
Because every time something new begins, there is an opportunity to discuss spiritual renewal, and the new life Jesus offers.

“He who was seated on the throne said, ‘I am making everything new.’”
Revelation 21:5

My friend, let your light shine for Jesus daily, helping others know Him and prayerfully, choose Him as their Lord and Savior.

“Let your light shine before others, that they may see your good deeds and glorify your Father in heaven.”
Matthew 5:16
