Matthew 6:21 NIV

"For where your treasure is, there your heart will be also."

My friend, where is your heart?

I grew up hearing the saying, “He died of a broken heart.” But let me ask you, are you dying of a broken heart? No, I’m not referring to an earthly love story. I’m speaking about a spiritually decaying heart.

Our heart becomes the house for everything we register through our eyes. What we see impacts our mind, and our mind directs our body, either toward spiritual health or spiritual decay.

Jesus’ statement in verse 21 does not stand alone. He continues by warning us about how the condition of our hearts can lead us into darkness if we store the wrong things inside. In Matthew 6:22–23, Jesus says:

“The eye is the lamp of the body. If your eyes are healthy, your whole body will be full of light.
But if your eyes are unhealthy, your whole body will be full of darkness.
If then the light within you is darkness, how great is that darkness!”

My friend, what have you been recording through your eyes?
You can answer that question by examining what comes out of your mouth. That is why Scripture says:

“For out of the overflow of the heart the mouth speaks.”
Luke 6:45

My friend, it is never too late.

As the holiday season is in full swing and the new year is approaching, ask yourself honestly: Where is my treasure?

The desires of your heart, demonstrated through your speech and your actions, are the clearest indicators of where your treasure truly lies. For me, my treasure is in my deep desire to be with Jesus. I find myself constantly thinking about Him and waiting with expectancy for the day He calls me home or returns for His people. Just last month, I woke up in my sleep reciting this scripture before the Lord:

“Whom have I in heaven but You?
And earth has nothing I desire besides You.”
Psalm 73:25

My friend, take time to clean out your treasure box. Tune your heart. Make sure the desires within you lead you toward the treasure that lasts eternally.
