"A certain ruler asked him, ‘Good teacher, what must I do to inherit eternal life?’ Jesus replied, ‘Why do you call me good? No one is good, except God alone."
Surrender Over Surface-Level Goodness
The ruler came to Jesus with an honest question. On the surface, he looked devout. Yet Jesus’ response revealed a deeper truth: our human definition of “good” is not the same as God’s.
Many people believe that kindness, generosity, or being “good” is enough. But outward goodness does not equal holiness. Holiness requires surrender, obedience, and heart transformation.
Isaiah reminds us: “All of us have become like one who is unclean, and all our righteous acts are like filthy rags” (Isaiah 64:6). Good deeds cannot earn eternal life. Salvation is God’s gift, received through faith in Jesus Christ, lived out by repentance and surrender.
Revelation 21:8 warns that sin—whether cowardice, unbelief, idolatry, or lying—leads to the second death. This is not scare tactics but a loving warning: all sin separates us from God.
Jesus does not call us to be “good people.” He calls us to be born again (John 3:3), repent, and follow Him. The ruler walked away, sad because he would not surrender. But we have a choice today: to lay down pride, sin, and self-reliance, and receive the eternal life that only comes through Christ.
Don’t settle for the world’s version of goodness. Embrace holiness through surrender to Jesus.
