"Son of man, these men have set up idols in their hearts and put wicked stumbling blocks before their faces. Should I let them inquire of me at all?"
When the Heart Becomes an Idol’s Throne
When I first read this verse, I didn’t fully understand what it meant to set up idols in the heart. Yet Jesus made it clear that nothing should ever come before God:
“Away from me, Satan! For it is written: Worship the Lord your God, and serve him only.” (Matthew 4:10, NIV)
For years, I assumed I was safe as long as I didn’t bow before statues or worship possessions. But Scripture reveals something deeper: the heart itself can harbor hidden idols.
1 John 2:15–16 warns us not to love the world, its desires, or pride. Colossians 3:5 describes greed, lust, and evil desires as idolatry, because they take God’s rightful place in our hearts.
In my own journey, I discovered that idols aren’t always physical. I had exalted revenge, people-pleasing, unforgiveness, and even education above God. Outwardly, I still prayed and attended church, but my devotion was divided.
One day, God showed me I would remain trapped until I surrendered these burdens. When I laid them down, I experienced freedom. That trust gave me the courage to step out in faith and launch Who Is This Jesus? Ministry.
Reflection Questions:
If our identity, joy, or security rests in anything other than Christ, that thing may be an idol.
Sin always begins with desire:
→ Desire → demand → obsession → identity → sin.
James 1:14–15 warns:
“Each person is tempted when they are dragged away by their own evil desire and enticed. Then, after desire has conceived, it gives birth to sin; and sin, when it is full-grown, gives birth to death.”
That is why Jesus said in Luke 14:26 that even family and life itself must be loved less than Him. The Greek word miseo means “to love less.” Jesus wasn’t commanding hatred toward loved ones but teaching us to put Him above all.
My friend, idols of the heart are subtle and often hidden. They may look like good things, but they become traps when they replace our trust in God. True freedom comes only when Christ is our first love. My Friend choose Jesus and choose truth and life!
