"For what we preach is not ourselves, but Jesus Christ as Lord, and ourselves as your servants for Jesus’ sake."
Serving God Through the Gospel of Jesus Christ
When was the last time you paused and asked yourself, "Why do I believe in the gospel of Jesus Christ?"
I often ask myself this question. Six years ago, I faced it as Jesus, through the Holy Spirit, reminded me that He rescued me not for my glory, but for His glory and purpose.
Studying the Apostle Paul’s conviction in the book of Romans again in this season of my life is strengthening my foundation in Jesus Christ. He called me out of darkness to warn the world about the enemy’s schemes and invite humanity to see the path back to God.
I am learning that Paul’s dependence on the gospel of Jesus was his superpower. It enabled him to continue with conviction despite the many trials and opposition he faced throughout his life.
Paul understood that even his ability to serve Christ did not come from his own strength. He said:
2 Corinthians 3:5 (NIV)
"Not that we are competent in ourselves to claim anything for ourselves, but our competence comes from God."
Stop for a moment and ask yourself: Where do your strength and wisdom come from?
I remember fighting God for many years because I did not want to obey His call to become a vessel He could use to tell those willing to listen about the spiritual realm. Almost seven years ago, I decided to obey. But because of all my insecurities, I first believed I needed a certification or degree to equip me.
I will never forget how every door shut financially when I tried to move forward with my plan. One late night, I felt discouraged and upset because it seemed to me that God was not helping me do what He had called me to do. I had an attitude with Jesus.
In the quiet of the early morning, as I sat on my sofa, the Lord clearly said, "It’s not your training or education that is going to equip you to obey what I called you to do; it will be Me." Through tears, I remember saying, "Lord, show me the way."
I have seen God lead the way through this ministry of Jesus in ways I could never have managed on my own. He opened doors, shut doors, and sent people along the way to help me. Even though I do not yet see many of the things He has shown me, I remain faithful that they will come to pass.
As the Apostle Paul declared in 1 Corinthians 1:28, I consider myself among the lowly things of this world whom God has called out of darkness to be His witness. I serve in a world where humanity lives in complete denial that a spiritual war is raging for their souls.
The Apostle Paul understood that he was no better than his friends, family, or mentors who had not rejected the devil’s lies that he once defended. He understood that unmerited grace gave him the opportunity to walk alongside Jesus in the gospel.
My friends, let us embrace the gospel of Jesus Christ by applying His definition of greatness: "The greatest among you will be your servant." — Matthew 23:11 (NIV)
Reflection question: What is your posture as God’s servant, and where are you relying on your own ability instead of trusting Him to equip you?
